What Do You Need to Buy for Baby’s First Wardrobe?

Planning your newborn’s wardrobe can be exciting and fun, but also a bit tricky. As a first-time parent, it’s easy to buy tons of adorable baby clothing only to find out many items are unnecessary.

When building your baby’s first wardrobe, the key is to buy practical clothing so that you’re not wasteful, but also prepared. In this article, we’ll be breaking down exactly what clothing items (and how many of each) you’ll need for your new baby. Here’s what you need to know!

Things to consider

Before we dive into the recommended clothing list, there are a few important things to consider:

Choose the correct sizing:

It may seem like common sense to buy the “newborn” size for your new baby, but it’s actually smarter to slightly size up. On average, “newborn” clothes only fit babies up to 8 pounds which, for most babies, they won’t last very long. Some babies even come into the world weighing more than that! A more economical option is to buy size 0-3 months (which typically fits babies up to 12 pounds), as you can always roll up the sleeves and pant legs for a few weeks while your baby grows into the larger size.

Consider quality:

When it comes to buying your baby’s first clothes, prioritize quality over quantity. Buying high-quality items not only gives your baby a more cozy and comfortable experience, but also reduces waste and carbon emissions. Ideally, choose clothing that’s made with organic and sustainable fabrics for the safety of your baby and the environment.

Think about laundry:

Your access to laundry and how many loads you do each week makes a big difference in the quantity of clothing you should have on hand. Our list of newborn essentials assumes you do a few loads of laundry per week. If you plan on doing laundry only once a week, multiply the numbers below by two. Conversely, if you plan on doing laundry daily, reduce numbers below in half.

Building your baby’s first wardrobe

Now that we’ve covered those considerations, let’s get to the fun part: building your baby’s first wardrobe!

Onesies

A onesie (also called a bodysuit) is a must-have staple in every baby’s wardrobe. This clothing item serves as an easy, no-fuss outfit in summer or a basic layer in winter. They feature either long or short sleeves with snaps closure at the crotch for easy diaper changing.

Suggested quantity: 6-8

Kimonos

Kimono-styles bodysuits, romper, and gowns feature snap or tie closures on the sides. After putting the baby’s arms into the sleeves, all you have to do is pull the fabric around your baby’s chest and use the ties or snaps to secure it in place. That means there’s nothing to pull over your baby’s head! This style is particularly great for your baby to wear until their umbilical cord falls off, usually around one to two weeks after they’re born.

Suggested quantity: 4-5

Pants

Some parents prefer to have a single piece like a romper or footie to save work, but it’s good to have a few pairs on hand to pull over bodysuits when it’s chilly.

Suggested quantity: 3-5

Footies and Gowns

Footies and gowns are one-piece garments that cover the legs and arms. They can not only be used for sleep, but also during the daytime. Gowns are particularly useful during those first few months when you want something that’s quick and easy to slip on and off for frequent diaper changes.

Suggested quantity: 4-5

Hats

Beanie-styles hats are essential in the early weeks and months to keep your baby warm. Remember, babies don’t regulate their body temperature well. Check the back of their neck for temperature to make sure they are comfy and to prevent overheating.

Suggested quantity: 2

Socks

Even during the warmer months, you’ll want to make sure your baby’s feet stay nice and toasty in socks. If your baby is due in the winter, add two extra pairs to your list.

Suggested quantity: 5

Swaddles

Swaddles mimic a womblike environment and help prevent babies’ startle reflex when waking up from sleep. Many parents even like to use swaddles for nighttime sleep.

Suggested quantity: 2-3

Baby Blankets

Altough American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggest not to use baby blankets until they are 12 months old, but it’s not a bad idea to keep one in your diaper bag for occasions like diaper change in the park or a drop in temperature. A well made soft, comfortable blanket will hold up long enough to last through the toddler and preschool years, and possibly even beyond. Babies can play on them and start to form an attachment (becoming a security blanket).

Suggested quantity: 1-2

The bottom line

The above list breaks down the types and number of items you’ll want to have on hand when you bring your baby into the world. Keep in mind that if your baby is born in the winter, you’ll need some additional items, including a pair of mittens and a couple of jackets. If you’re having a summer baby, don’t forget to pick up a sun hat to protect their delicate face!
